Kutná Hora

Located in the heart of Bohemia, just a bit east of Prague, Kutná Hora's historical and cultural significance make the city a premier destination in the Czech Republic.  On the small side as cities go, its intimacy adds to its charm, and the fascinating sights in Kutná Hora draw visitors from as far away as Australia.  Kutná Hora, together with its neighbouring town Sedlec, is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is definitely worth a visit.  Direct Flights can organise your cheap holidays to Kutná Hora providing super deals on flights to Kutná Hora or even complete Kutná Hora travel packages.

With its marvellous history, mediaeval charm and colourful local culture, Kutná Hora's reputation as a holiday spot goes far beyond its size.  Originally built around silver mines, Kutná Hora prospered and became a royal city in the 14th century.  Well-preserved masterpieces of architecture from the Middle Ages survive today and reflect the city's proud history.  Kutná Hora's Gothic St. James' Church and the Church of St. Barbara, as well as the Cathedral of Our Lady at nearby Sedlec, delight the eye.  The Italian Court, formerly a royal residence and mint, is now an excellent museum showcasing minting techniques and coins.  Hrádek (Little Castle), a portion of the former municipal fortifications, now houses a museum of mining with a tour that includes a visit to a former mediaeval silver mine.  And the Gothic Stone Haus, now a museum, contains one of the richest archives in the Czech Republic.

The Sedlec Ossuary (the "bone church") is a small chapel that's located beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints in Sedlec, a suburb of Kutná Hora. The ossuary contains tens of thousands of human skeletons, all artistically arranged to form decorations and furnishings for the chapel.  Urban myth says that a monk went mad and made sculptures from the bones, but they are actually the work of a woodcarver who was commissioned to decorate the chapel.  His fantastic creations include the coat of arms of a local aristocratic family and a chandelier that contains every bone in the human body. There are a few other bone churches scattered around Central Europe, but none are nearly as fascinating or as photogenic.  The renowned bone church is primarily responsible for the region's popularity as a holiday spot, but don't do yourself an injustice by only visiting it during your holiday in Kutná Hora.  Cultural events to catch include the Silver Mining Festival - a colourful mediaeval celebration where the town comes alive with music, dance, jousts, jugglers and falconers, and the St. Wenceslas Winemaking Festival.   In fact, Direct Flight International can help you experience more of the Czech Republic- explore Czesky Krumlov, Prague, or even travel around the world to New York City- no one makes it easier!
