Palma, Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca, usually simply called Palma, is the charming capital of Mallorca (sometimes spelled Majorca), the largest of the Mediterranean Sea's beautiful Balearic Islands. Discount travel to Palma is extremely popular with holiday-goers from all over the world, and for good reason. Many visitors with Palma travel packages seek sun, sand and surf, and since Palma is located on Mallorca's southern tip, there's plenty of that to go around. However, there's much more to Palma and Mallorca in general, than fabulous beaches.
Palma sits on a scenic bay famous for its spectacular sunsets. Originally built by the Moors in the style of a casbah, or walled city, some of the city's centuries-old Moorish structures can still be seen. Palma once was one of the chief ports in the Mediterranean, and Old Palma features an enormous cathedral befitting the city's importance to Mediterranean shipping. Today the bay is full of visiting yachts, not mercantile ships, and Palma's skyline is characterised not only by Bellver Castle and the cathedral, but also by high-rise hotels.
There's a wide variety of accommodation in Palma, and the city also features most of Majorca's restaurants and nightclubs. Due to Mallorca's popularity as a holiday destination, many direct flights to Palma arrive from many European cities.

Palma's Castell de Bellver is a castle atop a hill, once the summer palace of Mallorca's kings. It now houses the Museu Municipal and its collection of archaeological objects and old coins, but the panoramic view from the castle is the real must-see. Palma's astounding mediaeval cathedral features primarily Gothic architecture, but its main facade and some of its interior are Art Nouveau, having been renovated by the famed Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi in the early 1900s. The cathedral's spacious interior features a soaring ceiling, elaborate stained-glass windows, an altarpiece by Gaudi and a rich collection of religious artwork. The narrow lanes of Palma's colourful Mediaeval quarter (the Barri Gòtic) are east of the cathedral.
Opposite the cathedral and surrounded by Moorish gardens and fountains, the Palau de l'Almudaina was once a Moorish fortress reminiscent of the Alcázar at Málaga. Now a museum, it displays art, suits of armour and Gobelin tapestries.
The world-renowned artist Joan Miró lived and worked on Mallorca for many years, and his former estate is now a museum exhibiting his art and sculptures. Art buffs will also want to visit the Museum of Spanish Contemporary Art, with works by Picasso, Miró, Dalí, Juan Gris and many other modern Spanish artists.
